- A Thousand Years at Sea
- Thursday, March 11, 2010, 7:00 pm
- A Thousand Years at Sea is the fusion of singer-songwriters Colin Cotter and Ethan Lewis, and pianist Neil Pearlman's distinctive and innovative musical sounds, bringing together elements of folk, jazz, celtic, and rock into a dynamic and stirring musical experience. Colin Cotter has shown himself to be a prolific composer and lyricist, writing eight of the songs on ATYAS's debut album, Silver Shores Await. His soulful singing is complimented by a fiddle and guitar which have developed strongly in his years of jamming and performing. Ethan Lewis brings a lot of talent and experience to the table - a rich, organic singing style, tremendous compositional and lyrical depth and sincerity, and (at only 26 years old) over two decades of fiddle-playing epicness. Neil Pearlman has performed across the country with many of the best contemporary and traditional musicians of today. His innovative, genre-defying style combines a family background in Scottish traditional music with a depth of experience in jazz and contemporary music.

- Vox Pop Blues Night featuring Bill Sims, Jr.
- Tuesday, March 16, 2010, 8:00 pm
- The Blues has many distinct origins and sounds. Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, West Coast Blues, East Coast Blues, Rhythm and Blues and on and on, each with its own unique flavor. If you ask Bill Sims what type of Blues he plays, his answer is simply, "I play the Blues." In 1946, the Rev. William Sims moved his family from the hard life of sharecropping in rural Georgia to Marion, Ohio where Bill was raised. The Reverend brought with him the rich musical tradition of his childhood; the Blues and Gospel. He passed it all onto his son who started playing piano at the age of four on the old piano in the living room. At age fourteen, Bill turned professional when he joined the Jacksonian Blues, a rhythm and blues band considered the top in Ohio. He left the band to attend Ohio State University where he majored in music. He had the privilege to play with many great Blues and R&B legends that performed at the University. He learned his lessons well sitting in the piano chair of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Freddie King, the Ojays, Jerry Butler and many more. In 1971, Bill joined The Four Mints, a doo-wop rhythm and blues group. Some of their songs made it to the charts, including You're My Desire and Row My Boat. The group traveled the country, opening for the mega-bands of the 1970s such as Gladys Knight and Earth, Wind and Fire. In 1976, Bill left The Four Mints to explore other musical venues. Incorporating his vast musical expertise and love for world music, Bill founded The Lamorians, an avant-grade jazz band that relied heavily on traditional African drumming. In 1988, Bill came full circle and returned to the Blues. He founded his own band, Bill Sims and the Cold Blooded Blues Band where he is both lead guitarist and lead vocalist. He is currently considered one of the best musicians in the New York City Blues scene. Besides regularly performing at the best Blues clues in the city, Bill tours extensively both domestic and internationally. His virtuoso musicianship can be heard in most homes across America in the advertising spots of Coca-Cola, Reebok, Folgers and ESPN. In 1992, Bill released his first CD, Blues Before Sunrise. In 1999 his much-awaited CD Bill Sims was released on Warner Brothers records to coincide with the 10 hour PBS special on Bill. When asked why he plays the Blues, Bill simply replies "because my daddy played the Blues". Luckily for music lovers everywhere, the tradition continues.

- Vox Pop Movie Night - The Quiet Man (1952)
- Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 8:00 pm
- THE QUIET MAN (1952) John Ford's Oscar winning comedy is the ultimate in Hollywood blarney, enormously entertaining and moving in equal measure. John Wayne plays a Irish American boxer who travels to his late mother's village on the emerald isle to buy the ancestral home she was born in. He finds romance in the person of ethereal yet assertive beauty Maureen O'Hara, and conflict via her blowhard brawler of a brother, Victor McGlaglen. This glorious dose of Irish stout, which Ford waited almost twenty years to make is a funny, exciting, beautiful dream of a film. An almost Shakespearean comedy, not to be missed. "I think I'll go to the pub, and talk a little treason."

- Seachange Art Opening
- Saturday, March 20, 2010, 3:00 pm
- Seachange The artists represented here deal with transformation both as an act that holds potential for an unimagined future and in the ways they view and affect the material they work with. Mundane materials, geometric patterns and everyday scenarios are re-examined, altered and made new. Inherent in these works is a quiet insistence on the importance of personal vision. Martha Clippinger www.marthaclippinger.blogspot.com Martha Clippinger lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Martha's work uses painting in response to the visual potential of found objects like wood scraps and lampshades. These affected objects then become the impetus for site-specific installations in which the works can be seen as both individual paintings and parts to a whole. The physical space in which the work is displayed becomes the final tool for completing the work, just like the irregular outlines of the wood scraps provided the first gesture with which to begin. Martha is the founder of the dirty dirty, an alternative artist space that encourages collaboration and experimentation. Julie Evanoff www.julieevanoff.com/ Julie Evanoff is a Brooklyn based artist who works across mediums. Her participation in recent group exhibitions include: Stories real and vividly imagined at Gallery Niklas Belenius, Stockholm, Sweden; Hallways, Brooklyn, NY; and The Brooklyn Rail, Auction Exhibition, NY, NY. Her animations have been screened in several video festivals including 2k5 Video Festival and City Without Walls, Juried Video Festival. She received the Geraldine Dodge Award for residencies at the Women’s Studio Workshop and the Vermont Studio Center. She completed her MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where she received the Paul Robeson Emerging Artist Award. S Kovach S. Kovach lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Kovak’s painted postcards of U.S. National Parks are depictions of apprehended histories, mystical visions, and the typically unnoticed traces of a physical environment’s story. Intended to suggest multiple realities existing simultaneously in the landscape, her abstraction is of the spirit of place. Sarah G. Sharp www.sarahgsharp.net Sarah G. Sharp is a Brooklyn based artist who utilizes real and imaginary forms inspired by vernacular architecture, analog modes of communication and "inspirational" decor that often address what it means to exist in the margins of a community. She received an MFA in Studio Art and an MA in Modern and Contemporary Art History from Purchase College, SUNY. Sarah received the BRIC Rotunda Gallery Video Fellowship and was awarded a funded residency at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center in 2009. Exhibitions include Content and Discontent at the Frederieke Taylor Gallery in New York; 50,000 Beds at Real Art Ways, Hartford, CT; Slightly Off Center, at 55 Mercer Street Gallery, NY and a forthcoming solo exhibition at Gallery 1724 in Houston, TX. Sarah recently initiated the collaborative project "From Dexter to Sinister." Parsley Steinwiess www.parsleysteinwiess.com Parsley Steinweiss lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She photographs accumulations, creating a visual catalog of her personal environment. Her series, Contact Sheets, are photographs of hundreds of stacked, photographic prints, created over the past ten years. The resultant image is a series of lines, each representing a contact sheet, a sedimentary record of growth and time.

- Exploit the Exchange All Ages Show
- Saturday, March 20, 2010, 6:00 pm
- The Exploit the Exchange Foundation is an idea born from a group of local teenage musicians that consists of sending money to countries in poverty with big exchange rates so they get to most value out of the charity! Jay Paulos of The Soccer Hooligans had the idea as his mother exchanged dollars for their yearly trip to visit their family in Brazil and he realized how far a dollar goes in countries where the economy is less developed. Coincidentally, these same countries are prone to need the most charity, and that's where it got interesting! Countries like Mozambique and Haiti have big exchange rates and even bigger poverty rates! They plan to make a small difference in many different parts of the world so that instead of trying to fix a problem by throwing ridiculous amounts of money at it, they will give enough to allow for resources to be achieved; to plant self-sustaining seeds. They will play on the third Saturday of the month and before every show will average the exchange rates and poverty rates of countries before deciding which charity to reach out to next. Jay said, "Because like we say in my country: It is human to fall down; however, it is even more human to help those who have fallen to pick themselves back up!" Suggested donation $5 Bands interested in participating can contact voxpopallages@gmail.com
