Is there a book in you?

VOX POP wants to help you print your book!

We have opened up a whole new store, called Publish Yourself! It's right next to our successful café.

VOX POP has merged with/acquired Long Dash LLC, to provide even greater print-on-demand solutions to all the writers, historians, and poets out there with that book in them.

Vox Pop, the cafe, is here for new authors to do book parties and author events.

Vox Pop has an experienced team of publishing professionals to help you.

CEO Sander Hicks is founder of Soft Skull Press, publisher of New York Megaphone newspaper, and can help guide your project. Dr. Michael Cramer, VP, Media Services, handles sales and customer service. He wrote an essay, "What is Micropublishing" below.

Vox Pop prides itself on a great schedule of author and music events. As a Long Dash/Vox Pop Publish Yourself customer, we'd love to throw a book party for you and your friends and fans in our cafe.

What is Micropublishing?
Vox Pop is a coffee shop and bookstore on Cortelyou Road in Flatbush, Brooklyn. We offer print on demand publishing services to authors, teachers, corporate executives, genealogists—anybody who as a book, report, article, family history, or anything else they want printed.

WHY PRINT ON DEMAND WORKS.

Traditional printing is done on an offset lithographic press. A picture is taken of the page to be printed. The image is then transferred onto a curved metal drum. A sheet of paper is run through the press beneath a thin membrane which keeps the paper and the drum from touching. Ink is transferred from the drum through the membrane and onto the paper. The sheets are then cut, collated, folded, and bound. It is a long, involved and expensive process.

Print on demand technology uses high quality digital printers. A computer sends the image to the printer, the pages are printed out, cut, and put into the binder.

The major difference between the two processes is cost. With traditional publishing, the major cost comes from setting up the press and then cleaning up the huge mess it creates at the end of a print run. It can cost as much as $10,000 to set up and then clean up a lithographic press, so printing one copy costs $10,000. Conversely, 10,000 copies would cost $1 apiece. This is why traditional printers prefer to do print runs of 100,000 copies or more. With print on demand technology the cost is always the same—around $7 per book. That’s $7 for the first book, seven for the 10,000th book. So if you are printing anything less then 1,000 copies, print on demand is less expensive then traditional printing. Since the upfront costs are minimal, authors no longer need publishers with deep pockets to pay for the cost of printing.

HOW PUBLISHING AT VOX POP WORKS

At Vox Pop we have an Instabook™ press on site. For limited print runs (minimum of 20 copies) we will print copies of a book and bind them on site for less then $10 per book. For larger print runs Vox Pop’s micropublishing service has books printed off site at an even lower cost. Here’s how it works:

Authors provide Vox Pop with a manuscript and cover art in digital form and we print their book.

  • Only black and white printing is available
  • Covers are available in matt or glossy for Instabook™ (we recommend matt). With micropublishing hardcover is also available.
  • Costs depend on the size of the manuscript, the number of graphics in the file, the trim size (size of the page), and the type of cover.
  • Books can be listed online on the Instabook™ digital bookstore.

Vox Pop beats other micropublishers on price.

Our closest competitors charge $18 for a book Vox Pop will charge $8 for.

Authors can also hold a book party at Vox Pop with discount refreshments to launch their books.  We hope to offer ISBN numbers and distribution services in the future, which would make books available online from book websites like Amazon and Borders.com. For more information refer to our sales brochure and pricelist, visit the website, or call me, Michael Cramer at 718-940-2084, or on my cell phone (347) 668 9521.
